Meet the Volume 48 Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor-in-Chief

Katherine Raths, May 2022

Editor-in-Chief

What did you do before law school, and how did you know law school was right for you?

Before law school, I taught high school English and Spanish. I started my career in Madrid, Spain, and ended it at Breck in Golden Valley, MN. After seeing the inequities that existed in the education landscape, I knew that I wanted to understand the systems that created those inequities. Ultimately, I believed that a background in law would better equip me with the tools to make change.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

I have three goals. First, we would like to see Volume 48 continue to put diversity and equity at the forefront of our work. Second, we hope to foster an environment where all Law Review members feel that they have an important voice and that their ideas are heard. Third, we plan to work with all members to create innovative online content.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Ask questions and get to know other people on Law Review! It has been a strange year and being online could feel isolating at times. It is my hope that Associates have a team of people on Law Review who they feel comfortable reaching out to if they have questions, comments, or concerns.

Andy Taylor, Jan. 2023

Associate Editor-in-Chief

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I worked for nearly ten years as a staffer for two members of Congress and on the staff of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. While living in Washington, I met my wife who is from Minnesota. She waged a [successful] campaign to move back to her home state that was more impressive than any lobbying effort I ever witnessed during my years on Capitol Hill. At first, I resisted the move because I could not imagine what I would do professionally in the Midwest. Eventually, it occurred to me that I had been trying to write and interpret federal law every day for decade. So, I decided the next natural steps was to practice law.

What are you most excited for as Associate Editor-in-Chief for Volume 48?

I am excited in my role to get to know my fellow Board members better as friends and colleagues. I am already immensely impressed with the talent and dedication of our Board. It’s rewarding to be part of a student-run organization where we can learn and be creative outside of the classroom.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Manage your time wisely. When you are assigned a task, immediately check the work you have been given and assess how much time it will take you to complete, even if you can’t start the work right away.
