Meet the Volume 48 Articles Editors

Madalyn Elmquist, May 2022

Articles Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I went straight from college to law school. Nonetheless, for two years during college, I worked for a criminal defense and family law firm in Mankato, MN: Birkholz & Associates, LLC. This firm and my undergraduate mentor, Sara Edwards-Burger, guided and affirmed my decision to enter the legal field.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

I want to build upon the momentum from Volume 47 by publishing timely articles addressing pertinent issues (i.e., reproductive rights, racial justice, police reform, gender equality, etc.) to encourage legal discourse and societal reform.

Meet the Volume 48 Symposium and Online Editors

Maggie Green, May 2022

Symposium Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I always knew I wanted to go to law school. When I was a junior in undergrad, I met with a handful of attorneys to discuss their careers and the decision to go to law school. Each one recommended that I get some work experience before deciding law school was the right fit for me, so I took a few years off and worked in state-level politics. I am so glad I did. I started out on a state senate campaign, then worked for two different government relations firms. During those three years between undergrad and law school, I met incredible people and became confident that law school was the right choice for me. I also got the chance to meet attorneys in a variety of practice areas and saw firsthand how they used their legal education to advocate for community change.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

Mitchell Hamline as a law school is known for its strong ties to the community and for breaking away from the conventional law school experience. My classmates are from a wide variety of backgrounds and Mitchell Hamline’s alumni are consistently recognized for excellence in practice across the country. I want Volume 48 to reflect and celebrate that tradition. As the symposium editor, I am looking forward to highlighting the amazing work happening in both the Minnesota legal community as well as our Mitchell Hamline community.

Meet the Volume 48 Managing Editors (2/2)

Becky Erickson, May 2022

Managing Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I worked in the environmental realm before starting law school, primarily focused on environmental policy. I started thinking about law school while working for a legislative council and realized my favorite part of the job was analyzing legal questions. I finally decided law school was right for me after months of conversations with my boss and mentors.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

My main goal as a Managing Editor is to aid in Associate growth and development for three reasons. First, serving on Law Review is a lot of work, but it is my hope that we can provide each Associate with a rewarding experience by investing in their growth and development. Second, Associates play a critical role in our editorial process and our success depends on them. Third, I want to set Volume 49 up for success by cultivating interest in serving as future Board members in a capacity well-suited with their skill set.

Carrie Backman, May 2022

Managing Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I completed an English degree at NDSU in Fargo. I decided on law school because I am allergic to cats and dogs so my Plan A of being a vet was out.

What was the most rewarding part of being an Associate for Volume 47?

Having an opportunity to learn skills that I will use in practice without the constant pressure to perform for grades.

Meet the Volume 48 Notes & Comments Editors

Sheena Denny, May 2022

Notes & Comments Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

Before law school I worked in the public sector at various levels of government. Shortly after the death of Philando Castile, I was listening to KMOJ when a caller asked, “where are the community leaders?” The host responded, “why are you not that leader?” I chose to go to law school to impact policy, but you cannot do that without first understanding it.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

To be impactful. I want Volume 48 to be remembered for our bold action, fearlessness, and our ability to effect change.

Meet the Volume 48 Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor-in-Chief

Katherine Raths, May 2022

Editor-in-Chief

What did you do before law school, and how did you know law school was right for you?

Before law school, I taught high school English and Spanish. I started my career in Madrid, Spain, and ended it at Breck in Golden Valley, MN. After seeing the inequities that existed in the education landscape, I knew that I wanted to understand the systems that created those inequities. Ultimately, I believed that a background in law would better equip me with the tools to make change.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

I have three goals. First, we would like to see Volume 48 continue to put diversity and equity at the forefront of our work. Second, we hope to foster an environment where all Law Review members feel that they have an important voice and that their ideas are heard. Third, we plan to work with all members to create innovative online content.
