Meet the Volume 48 Managing Editors (1/2)

Carrie Backman, May 2022

Managing Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I completed an English degree at NDSU in Fargo. I decided on law school because I am allergic to cats and dogs so my Plan A of being a vet was out.

What was the most rewarding part of being an Associate for Volume 47?

Having an opportunity to learn skills that I will use in practice without the constant pressure to perform for grades.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Complete each step of your long paper at least two days in advance of the deadline–it will make it so much less stressful! And don’t be afraid to email your ME about anything whether it be about law review, law school, or just life advice.

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

I worked for the Minnesota Attorney General’s office reviewing consumer complaints relating to health insurance. I decided to attend law school as it was the logical next step to build upon my credentials.

What are your goals for Volume 48?

Be a resource for my associates and complete assignments in a timely manner.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Patience. Turn on your favorite Netflix show and settle into the reviews. Keep a running word document of the most used rules you encounter. Rinse and repeat, and the reviews will go by quicker and quicker.

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

In college, I worked as a Refugee and Immigrant Program Intern with the Advocates for Human Rights. I would interview Asylum applicants and prepare summaries for the lawyers. It was hard work and, at times, emotionally taxing, but I loved it. That was when I knew I wanted to go to law school.

What has been your favorite part of the Mitchell Hamline experience so far?

There’s something for everyone. We have so many different classes, clinics, and externships. It’s so important to explore different areas of law in law school so you can see what interests you. I came into law school thinking I wanted to practice business law, and I’m leaving with plans to work as a civil rights attorney.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Managing Editor

What did you do before you enrolled in law school, and how did you decide law school was right for you?

Before law school I planned to get a PhD in history focusing on Cambodian women’s history. When it came time to finish my Master’s degree and apply for further grad school, I realized I could do more good for the world by going to law school than I could by hiding in the halls of history department academia. So here I am.

What are you most excited for as a Managing Editor for Volume 48?

As a Volume 48 ME, I’m most looking forward to meeting my “team” and helping them come to love the Law Review process.

What advice do you have for incoming Associates?

Don’t be afraid to reach out to your ME or anyone else on the Board. The Board is there to help you be successful, and we definitely love to talk to people.
